Exam Preparatory Course

The KSPU recommends that the students take standard national tests of Russian as a foreign language (TORFL). The tests will reveal and assess your language skills. TORFL is certified by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The exams are taken in special regional exam centers.

Currently the Russian testing system for speakers of Russian as a foreign language consists of:
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Elementary level
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Basic level
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Level one. (TORFL-1)
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Level two. (TORFL-2)
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Level three. (TORFL-3)
- Test of Russian as a Foreign Language. Level four. (TORFL-4)


The Russian National Testing System is included in Association of Language Teachers of Europe (ALTE).

Elementary Level. This level offers the candidate the minimum level of communicative competence.

To achieve this level, the beginners in studying Russian will need eight weeks of 20 lessons per week of the Standard Course in the Professional Russian Language Center.

Basic Level. Achieving this level will allow foreign students to satisfy the most necessary communicative needs when conversing with native speakers in a limited number of predictable situations.

Students who have not studied Russian before will need 20 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve the Basic Level.

Students who have already achieved the Elementary Level will need 12 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve the Basic Level.

Level One (TORFL-1)
Achieving this level of Russian allows the candidate to satisfy the basic communicative needs in real situations of conversing with native speakers in everyday life and the social and cultural sphere. A certificate of completion of this level is necessary to enter institutions of higher learning in Russia.

Students who have not studied Russian before will need 36 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level One.

Students who have already achieved the Elementary Level will need 28 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level One.

Students who have already achieved the Basic Level will need 16 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level One.

Level Two (TORFL-2)
The exam attests to a high level of competence in communication in all spheres. This level of Russian qualifies the candidate for conducting professional activities in Russian as a specialist in the humanities (excluding areas of expertise of philologists, translators, editors, journalists, diplomats, and managers who conduct their professional activity in a Russian linguistic environment, for which this exam is intermediate), engineering, and scholarly research in the natural sciences. This certificate is necessary for receiving a diploma of baccalaureate, master's degree, as well as candidate of sciences of the aforementioned areas of consentration.

Students who have already achieved Level One will need 16 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level Two.

Level Three (TORFL-3)
The exam attests to a high level of competence in communication in all spheres. This level of Russian qualifies the candidate for conducting professional activities in Russian as philologists, translators, editors, journalists, diplomats, and managers who conduct their professional activity in a Russian linguistic environment. This certificate is necessary for receiving a diploma of baccalaureate, specialist, and a master's degree of the aforementioned areas of concentration (excluding specialists and masters in philology, for which this exam is intermediate).

Students who have already achieved Level Two will need 18 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level Three.

Level Four (TORFL-4)
The exam attests to a level of Russian that approximates that of a native speaker. This certificate is necessary for receiving a master's degree in philology that grants the right to all types of teaching and scholarly activity in the sphere of Russian language.

Students who have already achieved Level Three will need 18 weeks of 20 lessons per week to achieve Level Four.


The Russian Preparatory Course at KSPU includes:

- 45-minute russian language classes according to the educational plan
- Orientation tour
- Room and board with a Russian family (if requested)
- Class materials and the end of course certificate
- Transfer to/ from the airport (if requested)
- Visa support letter
- Opportunity to get acquainted with magnificent sights of Petrozavodsk accompanied by the guide
- The numerous intriguing events, meetings, excursions, and parties that are held regularly.
